Concert broadcast live on RTS Service 2 (Concert nomade)Bach's St. Matthew Passion was first performed in Leipzig's Thomaskirche on 11 April 1727 during Good Friday Vespers. In writing this work, the Cantor undoubtedly realised that he was giving a new impetus to the history of music. Never before had one heard a work of such inner coherence of text, with three choirs and two orchestras, bringing together an incredible variety of styles in use and of such vast dimensions (it lasts more than three hours!). And since then, this masterpiece has lost none of its emotional impact.
